There are two types of brain injury, traumatic and non-traumatic. Examples of non traumatic brain injury can occur from seizures, tumors, or stroke. A traumatic brain injury (TBI) occurs from an external blow or force to the head that results in damage to the brain. This can be caused by falling off a bicycle, car accidents, sports, etc. A traumatic brain injury can range from mild to severe. It is important to note the concussions are considered brain injury. The figure below provided by the Mayfield Clinic gives an excellent visual representation of the parts of the brain and what each part is in control of in a healthy brain and an injured brain.
